This is a rare Butterfield style compass and sundial made circa 1700, signed Jouvenet A Paris. Jouvenet was very well known French sundial maker in the early 1700. It is solid brass, with a fantastic bird shaped gnomon but the adjustable blade is missing. The front is engraved with the various times, and the back is engraved with various cities and latitudes. The sundial measures 7.5cm in length. The compass is in excellent working order and finds North easily. This is a rare and high quality sundial compass. |
