The Boreal Arrow
Code BA11100726: Millikin & Lawley English Wood Compass, c. 1860
This is a nice English compass dating from late 1860. It comes in a mahogany wood case still in excellent condition. No damage. It has two hooks to close the front lid. Strong hinges. The compass has a nice dial typically used between 1850 and 1900. It has a flat blue needle with golden N at North and S at South. The needle finds North easily and precisely. It has a transit lock that blocks the needle in place when the lid is closed. Inside front lid there is a sticker with Makers signature: MILLIKIN & LAWLEY, 161, STRAND, LONDON, SURGICAL, MATHEMATICAL and OPTICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS. The makers were well known in the medical domain and were advertised in several medical books such as "The Lancet London: a journal of British and foreign medicine, Volume 2" published in Oct. 1861. The compass is covered with flat glass crystal, which could be a replacement since it has some chips to the extreme edge. The case dimensions are 75 x 75 x 21 mm. This is a nice a rare compass that would be a nice add to any compass collection.
