The Boreal Arrow

Code BA130821474: Leather Cased Compass by Negretti & Zambra, c. 1880

This is a nice and rare pocket compass made by the famous English instrument maker Negretti & Zambra of London. I would place its manufacture around 1880. It comes in a leather/wood case in excellent condition with strong hinge and a hook to secure the lid closed. The compass itself is housed in a gilt brass case in excellent condition. The compass has a bar needle with a jewelled brass cap. The dial is in excellent condition and has nice detailed design. It is clearly signed Negretti & Zambra, LONDON. The compass is covered with a slightly domed glass crystal free of chips or scratches. The compass is very precise and finds North without any problem. Under the ring there is a small lever that must be pulled to release the needle. When it is pushed it will freeze the needle to prevent undue wear to the pivot when the compass is not in use. The compass has only 27mm in diameter, so it can be worn as a fob without the leather case, which has 36mm in diameter. Very nice and quality compass that would a great gift.
