The Boreal Arrow

Code BA21051602: ANTIQUE FRENCH SUNDIAL COMPASS c.1900

This is a rare French sundial compass made around 1900. The case is made of brass and still in excellent condition without dings or dents. It has a brass lid that closes snugly as it should. The inner dial is made of a yellow metal with German cardinal points. The dial is graduated in degrees and numbered every 20 degrees (0 to 360 at North). It is covered with a glass crystal in excellent condition without chips or scratches. The compass can be used with a folding gnomon bar to read the solar time. It has also a little bird to read the graduation on the gnomon. The compass is precise and points North without any problem. The needle can be blocked by acting on the transit lock on the side of the compass to prevent wear to the pivot when the compass is not in use. The needle is blue and silver in colour. Diameter of the case is around 57mm. This is a nice a rare example that would make a nice add to any serious collection.
