| This is a nice and rare leather cased compass made in England by T. W. WATSON around 1887. The compass is housed a brass case plated with a white metal. It is in excellent condition without dings or dents. On the back it is engraved: ALGIE FONTAINE FROM DUDLEY WARD, 1887. The case is large comparing to other similar compasses, measuring about 62mm in diameter and 26mm in thickness. It has a nice floating dial typically used on nautical compasses with beautiful compass rose. The dial is in excellent condition for its age. It is signed with maker's name: T. W. WATSON, 4. PALL MALL. LONDON. It is covered by a glass crystal that is also in excellent condition without chips or scratches. The compass is in excellent working order and finds North easily and precisely. The compass has a transit lock that can be activated by rotating the crown under the loop. It unlocks when turning the corwn anti-clockwise and locks by turning it clockwise. It is fitted in a nice brown leather wood case with dark blue velvet inside and still in excellent condition without any damage. The push is present and the lid closed and opens as it should. It has a strong hinge. The leather case measures around 75mm in diameter. This is a very special pocket compass that can also be displayed on a desk given its size. |
